Greystoke Mahale - what an awesome place

We went to Mahale in August 2010 where we had perfect weather. What an awesome place!. Lake Tanganika is like a fresh water ocean, superb swimming and fishing for our own meals--not that it is required. But what great sushi we caught! And those chimps-- they gave us a hard time the first day in forcing us to trek up the mountain which is very difficult at times, but the next day they accomodated us by staying low.

Hosts Steve and Kiri were top notch, accomodating and great fun to hang out with. We have been to a number of outstanding places in Kenya and Tanzania, and this by far has been our favorite--the remoteness, the chimps, wonderful accomodations, food, etc--- just so hard to describe as one needs to experience it. If you enjoy water, then Lake Tanganika is not to be outdone. We would return in a heart beat.

Greystoke Mahale is a wonderful place to meet our close relatives -- the fascinating chimpanzee. The location is beautiful, with the camp complementing the lake-side location. The bandas and main lodge are simple and comfortable, the food is very good, and the camp mgr's, Steve and Keri, are truly caring and gifted hosts. All that provides a wonderful ambience to launch your chimp treks, which are exciting and a bit humbling. Anyone who doesn't believe in evolution needs to visit Mahale! It is both funny and wonderful to see how human the chimps are, down to the adult disagreements and the young ones somersaulting in the leaves. If you are going to come all the way to Mahale, you might as well stay at the best camp.
